Rigorosum examinations and the defence of rigorosum theses at the St. Elizabeth University of Health and Social Work in Bratislava are conducted in accordance with Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Higher Education Institutions, § 53 (8) and § 63.

Through the rigorosum examination and the defence of the rigorosum thesis, the applicant demonstrates that, based on their previous studies in the respective field of study:

  • they possess in-depth knowledge of the broader foundations of the field and are capable of independently acquiring new scientific and practical knowledge,

  • they are able to apply the acquired knowledge creatively in professional practice.

Pursuant to Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Higher Education Institutions, upon successful completion of the rigorosum examination and defence of the rigorosum thesis, the following academic degree is awarded:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhDr.) in the fields of Nursing, Public Health, Laboratory Investigation Methods in Healthcare, and Social Work.

The defence of the rigorosum thesis forms part of the rigorosum examination in the field of study in which the student obtained a second-cycle (Master’s level) higher education degree.

The rigorosum thesis must be original. It may not be a revised or reworked diploma thesis or any other qualification thesis.

The rigorosum examination consists of two parts. It begins with the defence of the rigorosum thesis and is immediately followed by an oral examination in designated study subjects. During the defence, the applicant responds to comments included in the opponent’s review and answers questions from the examination committee.

The fee for the rigorosum procedure is specified in the current internal directive on fees.
