Why Study Dental Technology?

The aim of the Dental Technology study programme (1st level) is to equip graduates with the professional competencies required in dental technology and management. This field involves highly responsible professional work requiring independent decision-making and adaptability to changing conditions.

Graduates master a broad range of methods and techniques in dental prosthetics, applied in the process of preventive and therapeutic dental care as well as in other medical fields. In addition to strong theoretical preparation, students gain practical skills across a wide spectrum of methods and procedures and develop comprehensive professional thinking and practice.

Graduates are qualified to work independently or as part of a healthcare team in the fabrication of dental prostheses—excluding procedures performed directly in the oral cavity and maxillofacial area, which remain the responsibility of a dentist.

Graduate Profile

Graduates may work as dental technicians in public and private dental laboratories, in manufacturing companies specialising in prosthetics, in research focused on specialised healthcare prosthetic technologies, in companies distributing dental materials and equipment, as professional consultants or instructors, and in the education and training of dental technicians.

A graduate of Dental Technology (1st level) is able to perform professional practice by:

  • Being generally and professionally educated and capable of independent work based on the latest scientific knowledge, procedures, methods, and techniques while considering efficiency

  • Assuming professional responsibility for patient safety and respecting ethical principles of the profession

  • Acquiring, analysing, and effectively using professional information

  • Recognising the need for continuous professional development and applying the latest scientific and technological advancements

  • Actively participating in multidisciplinary scientific and technical activities in dental technology

  • Applying preventive and health-promotion methods

  • Contributing to research problem-solving in dental prosthetics

  • Planning, implementing, and managing the complete process of dental prosthesis fabrication

Study Programme Structure

University studies in Dental Technology are organised using a credit system fully compatible with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS).

All study activities—including lectures, seminars, practical classes, independent study, and creative work—are awarded credits. The number of credits corresponds to the workload and time required to successfully complete a subject and achieve learning outcomes.

Students must earn a specified number of credits from compulsory, compulsory elective, and elective courses in order to complete the programme successfully.

The credit system allows students to:

  • Distribute their study workload evenly throughout their studies

  • Choose an individual pace of study

  • Select from compulsory elective and elective subjects to shape their professional profile

  • Participate in mobility programmes and earn credits at another university, including abroad

Completion of the required number and structure of credits is a condition for graduation. Courses are organised within academic semesters according to the academic year schedule.

The university offers one study plan in accordance with current legislation and professional qualification requirements for Dental Technology. Education complies with Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the recognition of professional qualifications and with Government Regulation of the Slovak Republic No. 296/2010 Coll. on professional competence in healthcare professions.

Teaching and Practical Training

Theoretical instruction is provided through lectures and seminars delivered by highly qualified experts.

During their studies, students gain knowledge and skills not only in theoretical subjects such as psychology and professional communication, English, Latin, and healthcare organisation, but also in specialised subjects including anatomy, technology, dental prosthetics, first aid, pathology, orthodontics, and digital technologies such as scanning, milling, and 3D printing.

Students also have the opportunity to attend professional lectures and visit dental laboratories and companies both in Slovakia and abroad that manufacture and distribute materials used in the production of dental prostheses.
