The primary mission of the department is to educate and professionally train students for the profession of medical laboratory technician—specialists qualified to independently perform diagnostic procedures across clinical laboratory departments, including clinical biochemistry, hematology and transfusion medicine, clinical microbiology, immunology, genetics, toxicology, pathology, forensic medicine, public health and hygiene, and related disciplines.

The department delivers education within the field of study Health Sciences, offering the degree program Laboratory Examination Methods in Healthcare. Graduates are fully prepared to independently carry out specialized diagnostic duties across laboratory medicine divisions (including clinical biochemistry, hematology and transfusion medicine, microbiology, immunology, genetics, toxicology, anatomical pathology, clinical pharmacology, and functional diagnostics, as well as allied diagnostic fields such as forensic laboratories). As part of continuing academic and postgraduate education, the department also organizes rigorosum proceedings and doctoral (PhD) studies in the Laboratory Examination Methods in Healthcare program.

The department’s research focus builds upon the scholarly expertise of its academic staff and the clinical nature of the facility. This active scientific engagement is reflected in publications across domestic and international peer-reviewed journals, alongside research presentations delivered at national and international conferences.

The founder of the Laboratory Examination Methods in Healthcare study program is Dr. h. c. Prof. MUDr. Štefan Galbavý, DrSc.
